Daylight Savings Time is fast approaching which means it’s time to change the batteries in our smoke alarms. Here’s a few tips on changing the batteries and maintaining smoke alarms:

1. Fresh batteries must be installed every six months, even if the smoke alarm is powered by your home’s electrical system. When the power goes out, they’ll still work with a battery.

2. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for replacing your smoke alarm batteries. In general, open the front cover of the smoke alarm and replace with a newly purchased battery. Batteries have expiration dates and continuously lose power even when not in use. In other words, don’t use the battery you found in the junk drawer; buy a new one.

3. If you have a smoke alarm with an extended life (10 year) lithium battery, do not replace the battery. If the battery is nearing the end of its life, the entire alarm must be replaced.

4. Smoke alarms manufacturers recommend that alarms over 10 years old be replaced. After a 10 year service life, the alarm may not function properly. Don’t take a chance, replace old detectors.

5. Always test each smoke alarm once a month. Your life depends on smoke alarms and testing helps you identify potential problems before you need it the most.

6. Smoke alarms should be cleaned lightly when batteries are changed. After the cover is placed back on the smoke alarm, it’s OK to use a vacuum to lightly remove dust from the exterior cover. Cleaning or vacuuming the inside of a smoke alarm can cause it to malfunction.

Residents with any questions on smoke alarm batteries or maintenance are encouraged to contact the Lincoln County Fire Protection District #1 at 636-528-8567. We are here to help.
